PVC pond liner - processing and properties
Pond liner serves as a barrier between the water and the bottom of your garden. It ensures that your pond does not release any water into the substrate and at the same time prevents foreign bodies such as roots or stones from entering the pond.
Pond liners also make your pond more robust. Thanks to the high-quality PVC material, it ensures a long service life for your pond by protecting it from damage caused by the weather or UV radiation.
PVC, also known as polyvinyl chloride, is considered groundwater-repellent and cannot rot due to its chemically stable compound. Only the addition of plasticisers leads to the elastic properties of the plastic.
We offer PVC pond liners in various thicknesses from 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm so that you can use them on your pond in a targeted and customised way. Pond liners with a thickness of 1 mm are used to seal small and medium-sized ponds in the private sector. Thinner thicknesses of less than 1 mm are not intended for permanently planned ponds, but are more suitable for small installations in the garden.
Over time, PVC pond liners can age. They become stiffer and therefore tear more quickly. The good thing is that you can do it yourself with film adhesive. In addition, a PVC pond liner becomes susceptible to UV rays over a longer period of time, as the plasticisers lose their effect. Correct installation is necessary here to prevent damage to the PVC pond liner.
How to install the PVC pond liner
The PVC pond liner can be installed in your garden pond, swimming pond or natural pond. It is generally recommended to lay a pond fleece between the waterproofing and the substrate. If the bottom is covered with stones or root pressure from the side is to be expected, you should use a 1000 g pond fleece. It is therefore better to combine a thinner PVC pond liner (1 mm) with a thick protective fleece instead of a thick PVC pond liner without fleece.
Temperatures between 15 °C and 20 °C are ideal for laying the PVC pond liner, as this is when it is particularly flexible. It should be installed tension-free and professionally laid to extend its durability. Carefully lay out the pond liner in the pond area and smooth it out to avoid kinks. Also make sure that the pond liner protrudes from the edges of the pond. This ensures a secure seal over which the water cannot leak. You can use stones or our adhesive to attach the pond liner to the edges. For the bank area, you should always take care to avoid ice pressure, sunlight and mechanical damage. For this reason, a bank or embankment mat or stone slabs are also suitable as protection.
