Pond fleece to protect the pond liner
To protect your pond liner from cracks and other damage caused by sharp stones or roots and ensure its longevity, it is necessary to support it with pond fleece. The fleece protects the PVC plastic film from damage from the ground, such as stony substrates, undermining by small animals and root growth from trees and shrubs. Pond fleece also protects the pond liner from changes in the substrate, as this can move or sink over the years.
However, pond fleece can not only be used under the pond liner, but also over the liner to prevent damage and provide optimum protection. The risk of damage from above is often higher than from below. Attach the pond fleece above the PVC pond liner to protect it from damage, UV radiation or sharp objects. Damage, for example when pruning the plants, can be prevented here. Damage caused by using the pond for swimming or by the high water pressure acting on sharp stones in the water can also be avoided.
Which pond liner should you choose?
A look in your local garden centre or online shop will reveal a wide range of pond fleece. You can decide which fleece is right for your garden on the basis of decisive criteria. These include the weight per unit area, the geotextile robustness class (GRK) and the preference for recycled material or new fibres.
In our online shop you will find various types of pond fleece with the usual basis weights of 300, 500 or 1000 grams per square metre. So if you want to integrate your pond into a sandy bottom, you should opt for the 300 gram variant. Rooted substrates tend to require a 500-gram pond fleece, whereas stone substrates should be laid with a 1000-gram pond fleece. It is important that the pond fleece has a certain stability in order to exert pressure on the ground over the entire surface. This alleviates pressure points from the substrate and prevents the pond liner from overstretching.
Pond liners made from newly produced plastic fibres and recycled goods are being used more and more. When choosing the material, however, you should bear in mind that organic fibres are added to the recycled goods, which decompose over time and therefore reduce the stability of the pond fleece. For longer durability, pond fleece should be made of polypropylene (PP) or polyester (PES).
The most decisive criterion is the value of the geotextile robustness class, which indicates the filter stability of the pond fleece. The higher the GRK class, the higher the tolerated punch penetration force. For example, a GRK 2 requires a force of 1300 N, while GRK 5 fleeces can withstand 3700 N.
.How is the pond fleece laid out?
The construction of a pond needs to be well planned. First find a suitable spot in your garden and decide on the desired size. As soon as you have enough hard-working helpers and the necessary materials, it's time to get started.
Excavate the pond to the desired depth. Before you lay out the pond fleece, you should make sure that all sharp objects in the ground have been removed to prevent them from damaging the liner later. Lay the fleece smoothly on the substrate. All parts of the fleece should overlap considerably in order to avoid gaps during further work and thus prevent soil contact with the PVC pond liner. After laying, secure the pond fleece at the edges and at regular intervals along the base and side walls to prevent it from slipping when filling with water. You can use stones, staples or pond fleece adhesive for this.
After laying, you can attach all the necessary connections and then partially fill with water for the first time. Make sure that both your fleece and the liner are well attached to the edge beforehand.
Pond fleece to protect your plants
Pond fleece is versatile and can be used not only for pond construction, but also in other areas of landscaping and horticulture. You can use it in your beds, for example, to prevent weed growth and protect the subsoil from erosion. You can also use it to wrap or cover your plants in winter and thus make them more weatherproof against the cold.
