Properties of jute fabric

Our jute fabric is made of 100 percent natural fibre and is therefore a natural product. The rolls are 1.2 metres wide and have a basis weight of around 500 g/m2. Our jute fabric is also available by the metre on request. We offer cuts in lengths from 5 m to 200 m. The jute fabric provides the soil with natural erosion protection. The fabric is particularly stable and tear-resistant as well as easy and convenient to install. The jute fibres are tightly woven together and also protect the sensitive pond liner.

Jute originally referred to the bast fibre of the Indian corchorus plants. Nowadays, it is a collective term for basic fibres from different Corchorus plants. These grow in humid tropical climates and can reach a height of up to four metres. Outwardly, they resemble a giant herb from whose stalk jute fibres grow.

Apply jute fabric promptly

Artificial embankments in gardens and along roads erode particularly easily as vegetation with roots has not yet formed. For example, if you have created a new earth wall, you should not let any time pass before you lay the jute fabric. The coarse-meshed jute fabric, which consists of transverse fibres and is held together by a top and bottom net, is ideal for sowing seeds.

When laying, attach the jute fabric to the desired location on the slope or pond bank. The fabric should be firmly anchored, otherwise there is a risk of it slipping. Therefore, you should use fastening anchors made of wood or steel. These have a length of 200 mm to 400 mm.

Instructions for laying jute fabric

First of all, you should determine the required width of the jute fabric so that there is no miscalculation. If you want to use the jute fabric for pond construction, you should take the bank terraces into account. The cut of the jute fabric should be as long as the pond bank. The width of the mesh is determined by the overall dimensions of the bank terrace, bank wall and suction barrier.

Roll out the jute fabric over the entire area to be covered. You should cut off any excess with scissors or a carpet knife. Make sure that the pond liner is not damaged. Then attach the fixing anchors or, alternatively, large, heavy stones. It is best to use sand and gravel or lava stone to cover the jute fabric, known as slurrying. The porous nature of the latter helps to filter the water and thus support the pond filter. These substrates are particularly suitable for rapid plant growth.

Finally, sow the seeds onto the jute fabric. Here you can vary between flower and moss varieties. However, it is important to ensure that all plants are placed in the pond according to their needs. This allows you to create natural planting on the one hand and the fact that the plants do not have to compete for the same nutrients on the other.

Use of jute fabric

There are different uses for jute fabric. We list the most important ones below:

Jute fabric for pond construction

Jute fabric beautifies your garden pond. The low weight of the mesh makes it particularly suitable for use in shallow and gently sloping ponds. It also stores a large amount of water and protects the underlying pond liner from damage. The jute fabric prevents tears in the film and prevents the material from ageing quickly.

In addition, jute fabric allows plants to form a stable root system. The fabric makes it much easier for plants to establish themselves. Even if the jute fabric rots after some time, the soil will not erode, as the plants' roots will have taken over the role of the fabric by then.

Jute fabric as winter protection

Jute fabric, similar to covers, can be used for frost protection in the garden. The soil can be protected from light frost by the cover. Plants and shrubs can be protected from the icy temperatures by wrapping them in jute fabric. This is not only suitable for garden plants, but also for potted plants. Simply tie the jute fabric around the trunk to provide natural winter protection. Winter fleece is also suitable for this purpose.

Other uses for jute fabric

Jute fabric is also often used as packaging material, for example as robust jute sacks. As an environmentally friendly replacement for plastic bags, it is increasingly finding its way into everyday use. Jute fabric can also be processed into speciality paper, coarse yarn and carpet. Jute is a renewable raw material, making it a major competitor to domestic natural fibres such as flax and hemp in fibre composites.

Jute fabric should always be made from 100 per cent natural fibres. Chemical additives from mixed fabrics may harm the plants and fish. As an alternative to jute fabric, you can also use our coconut mats as embankment mats. These are also made from 100 per cent natural fibres.
