Winter fleece: to protect your plants

What is a winter fleece?

No snow to protect the sensitive plants, just a brutal easterly wind that dries out the branches even more: This is what winter looks like in many places in Germany. Our fleece for your plants is nevertheless an indispensable aid for amateur and professional gardeners. It acts as additional insulation and protects your plants. This is a lightweight mat or blanket that protects your plants from wind, frost and snow. Winter fleece consists of fibres that are not intricately woven together, but are held together by their own structure. Thanks to this structure, it can be used very flexibly and moulded as required. It is suitable for protecting a wide variety of plants of different heights and widths. In addition, it stores the heat that reaches the plants due to the infrequent sunlight in winter better under the cover and thus keeps the plants warm for longer. Winter fleece is put over the bushes like a sack or wrapped around the trunks and crowns of young trees. The protective blankets of the fleece are then fastened with cords.

What properties must a good winter fleece have?

The winter or plant protection fleece should protect your plants from harmful environmental influences, but also allow air, light and moisture to pass through. Especially in the cold winter, it has to withstand strong winds and stubborn weather for several months and still be ready for use again in your garden the following year. To protect your plants effectively, pay attention to the following properties when choosing the right winter fleece:

  1. breathable
  2. permeable to light
  3. heat-insulating
  4. tear-resistant
  5. weather resistant

Which plants should be protected with winter fleece?

In addition to plants that must not spend the winter outdoors, there are also so-called hardy plants. These survive the cold months with snow, wind or frost. Nevertheless, the winter weather puts a lot of strain on your plants, which is why they should be covered with a winter fleece. It helps to warm and support trees and shrubs and can also protect the crowns of potted plants. Winds or heavy snow can cause damage to the plants, as can frost. You should therefore protect your freshly planted trees in particular with a plant protection fleece. Young plants and new plantings in particular have not yet become as firmly and strongly anchored in the soil as older plants and are also less resistant to weathering. You should also cover your rose bushes, evergreen ornamental shrubs and Mediterranean plants with fleece. Although hardy plants are generally considered hardy, it is advisable to protect them with fleece due to the unstable weather conditions.

How much winter fleece you should put over your plants in the garden depends on various factors such as their location, age or size. They are therefore available in many different sizes in our online shop, so that the optimum protection is possible for each of your hardy plants.

Buy winter fleece in the Aquagart online shop

At Aquagart, we offer winter fleece by the metre, which you can cut to your exact requirements. Experience has shown that the volume of a shrub tends to be underestimated. We therefore recommend cutting off about a third more fleece than the amount you would spontaneously estimate. Our fleece is also available in different thicknesses, i.e. from a basis weight of 60 g/m² to 150 g/m². The greater the weight, the thicker the winter fleece and the stronger the thermal insulation. Your plants will survive safely even at extremely low temperatures.
