Weed protection fleece available in various materials
A weed protection fleece can be made of various materials, such as mulch, UV-repellent polyester (PES) and non-UV-repellent polypropylene (PP), as well as a combination of PES and PP.
The weed protection fleece made from mulch, also known as mulch fleece, is made from natural materials. This is a closed material. With its help, chemical weedkillers can be completely dispensed with. The reason for this is the deprivation of light, which deprives the weeds of their basis for growth. At the same time, the fleece stores so much water that the roots of the plants underneath can be adequately supplied. It does not pull threads and is tear-resistant, which prevents the fleece from fraying. Moreover, fungi and mould cannot form under mulch fleece. Its use is recommended if the surface is to be covered later. However, the fleece should always be laid underground and covered with materials such as sand, gravel or turf, as it is not very UV-resistant. Thanks to its structure and dark colour, it prevents weeds from developing and growing upwards.
The weed fleece made from PES, on the other hand, is UV-stable and does not need to be covered. It is highly permeable to water and air and easy to work with. This species also has a slightly roughened surface and is therefore also suitable for slopes. However, the roughened surface makes it easier for weed seeds to take root.
The PP weed protection fleece is not UV-stabilised and must always be covered. However, it is also easy to work with and has good water and air permeability. Unlike PES fleece, it has a smooth surface so that seeds can hardly take root here. However, this makes it unsuitable for use on slopes.
The Kombivlies, which consists of PES and PP, is a reversible fleece. A PES fleece against weeds was laminated onto a PP fleece. This has the advantage that it can be used both on slopes and on smooth surfaces. If the fleece is laid on a slope, the rough side is taken upwards so that the bark mulch sticks to it. There is also no risk of the bark mulch being washed away by heavy rainfall. On flat surfaces, you can place the smooth side of the fleece upwards to prevent unwanted seeds from sticking.
Weed protection fleece for gardening - use and effect
The fleece is available in different thicknesses (weight) and sizes to meet individual gardening requirements and needs. The lighter the fleece, the coarser the mesh and the more permeable it is. There are mulch fleeces that weigh between 50 g per m² and 190 g per m². In between are gradations from 2.5 to 5 g per m².
PES and PP nonwovens for weed control weigh 150 g per m² and are available in four width grades from 1.0 m to 2.0 m for PP and two width grades from 1.0 m to 1.5 m for PES. The combination fleece weighs 150 g per m² and is available from 25 m to 300 m in increments of 25 m.
In general, the larger the area to be covered, the heavier the fleece should be. For this reason, heavier nonwovens are also available with a higher number of square metres to ensure effective weed control and soil protection. The variety of weights and sizes allows you to choose the right fleece for your individual garden projects and thus find an efficient and long-term solution for suppressing weed growth.
Application of weed protection fleece - different materials offer weed protection on all surfaces
The thickness of the fleece you should choose depends on the level of weed infestation in the garden. For stubborn weed infestations, you should choose a heavy fleece. However, it should be noted that thicker fleeces are less permeable to light, water and fertiliser, meaning that the roots underneath are no longer sufficiently nourished.
A 50 g fleece is suitable for preventing isolated weeds from growing in the bed. However, it hardly deters stubborn weeds such as goutweed. The 100 g fleece is therefore recommended for kitchen gardens and larger areas with ornamental plants. With its narrower meshes, this fleece can keep out even moderately strong weeds. At 150 g, the fleece not only provides very effective weed control, but also sufficient water and oxygen permeability. The material is also very tear-resistant and rots more slowly. A product of this thickness and above can also be used for gravel floors if no plants are to grow on them. Before laying the fleece, you should loosen and level the ground. You can then cut the fleece to the desired size using standard scissors. Cut an X in the fleece so that existing plants can be carefully pulled through. You should then lay this with an overhang of approx. 10 cm and secure it with soil anchors if necessary. Nonwovens for weed control are particularly suitable for areas that are walked on a lot, such as lawns and gardens.
