What is an underlay membrane?
Underlays, also known as roof underlays, are a type of protective layer that is applied between the roof covering and the actual roof structure. A roof underlay is the basic requirement for a functioning roof. It should definitely be water-repellent so that rain or other types of moisture can drain away towards the eaves. Moisture from rain or snow that gets under the tiles due to the wind must be stopped by the underlay membrane to prevent moisture from penetrating the roof and, in the worst case, mould.
The underlay is used in the area of the substructure of the roof. Traditionally, underlays are mainly used on pitched roofs, but depending on the roof design, underlays are also used on flat roofs. If you have a pitched roof, the underlay is installed under the roof covering, i.e. normally under the roof tiles. The material of the underlay consists of two polypropylene (PP) fleece layers, between which there is a breathable polyethylene (PE) membrane as a third layer. This has the advantage that the underlay is both waterproof and air-permeable at the same time.
Open diffusion sarking membranes
You should be careful not to confuse the sarking membrane with the underlay membrane. The difference is that the sarking membrane allows moisture to pass through, but the underlay does not.
But why should one side of the roofing membrane be permeable? Moisture permeability to the outside is an important property of underlay membranes. They can prevent damage within the roof structure. Moisture that penetrates the roof structure and insulation material from the living areas, for example, can therefore continue to escape to the outside. This leads to a longer durability of your roof construction. This is not a must with a classic underlay membrane.Proper installation of roof underlays
The installation of underlay membranes requires specialist knowledge and should ideally be carried out by experienced roofing or construction companies. Start by carefully laying the underlay sheets on the supporting structure between the roof covering and fasten them securely with staples to ensure even coverage. The overlapping areas are then sealed to achieve a complete seal. To do this, we recommend using adhesive tape for underlayment.
During installation, it is important to pay attention to details such as the correct alignment of the membranes, the proper attachment of overlaps and the correct attachment of edge and corner areas. Improper installation can lead to leaks, heat loss and other problems that can affect the performance of the roof.
Possible uses of roofing membranes
Roofing membranes, as an alternative name for underlays, can be used not only for house construction, but also for your garden shed. The underlays are perfect for use under the roof covering. This means that your garden shed is also equipped for the rainy season and can withstand any continuous rain. With a high-quality underlay, you can also ensure that your garden furniture, your pond accessories or the dog bed stay dry.
There are many possible uses for underlays. You can also use these under the roof tiles or roof panels for dog kennels or rabbit hutches. Use underlay sheets for all kinds of animal housing and stables! So your loved ones are always dry.
The diffusion-open material of the underlay acts as moisture protection for the thermal insulation, but also withstands the wind. The underlay is installed on the timber boarding or thermal insulation. During installation, care should be taken to bond the underlays parallel to the gutter. It is also important that the individual underlay sheets overlap and are bonded at these points with a suitable adhesive or adhesive tape.
