What is decorative gravel?
Gravel is initially simply a size designation for mineral grains that are coarser than sand but do not reach the size of stones. To emphasise the size: The smallest are about the size of match heads, the largest like chicken eggs. In a fine gradation, decorative gravel is further subdivided into fine gravel, medium gravel and coarse gravel.
Polished decorative gravel, as offered in our online shop, is an aesthetically pleasing and versatile decorative gravel option to add a touch of elegance to your garden. Unlike conventional gravel or crushed stone, polished decorative gravel has been ground smooth and polished using a special process, which gives it a unique, shiny surface. The smooth stones can reflect the light and thus provide an additional eye-catcher in your outdoor area.
The various design options with decorative gravel
The design options for your garden with decorative gravel are endless. Use the following ideas as inspiration for how you can use decorative gravel effectively.
Creating footpaths with decorative gravel
Footpaths made of decorative gravel or chippings are among the absolute classics in garden design. You are free to choose the shape of the paths. A dead straight path, bordered on both sides by paving stones, looks very neat and tidy. If you want a more relaxed look, you can lay out the path in gently sweeping curves. Alternatively, the garden gravel can be made both narrower and wider with a straight course to create varied edges.
As paths cover a considerable area, the colourful effect of decorative gravel or chippings should not be underestimated. Black basalt chippings have a darkening effect and are well suited for paths in full sunlight. For paths in shady or semi-shady areas, light-coloured decorative gravel such as Carrara or Alpine dolomite is ideal.
Edging or laying out beds with decorative gravel
A gravel bed is ideal for beautifully showcasing individual or multiple plants with decorative gravel. This works perfectly in a small space of one square metre or less. Ferns are also suitable for a bed with garden gravel. You can also make a good choice with bush roses, heather shrubs, topiary balls made of boxwood or funkia.
Create seating areas with decorative gravel
Use decorative gravel to create a neat and defined seating area on the lawn in the garden. Garden gravel in shades of red is ideal for a cosy spot in the natural garden. White marble gravel goes very well with modern gardens. A mixture of different coloured pebbles has a neutral effect and is suitable for all gardens. You can achieve a great effect if you also surround the seating area made of decorative gravel with natural stone slabs.
Garden gravel on the house wall
Garden gravel on the house wall not only looks fantastic, but also fulfils an important protective function, as the decorative gravel acts as natural drainage. There is always some space between the individual pebbles so that water can drain away unhindered. Furthermore, edging the building with decorative gravel prevents unwanted stagnant water, which normally often finds its way into the cellar. The best drainage effect is achieved with coarse gravel, as the gaps are wider than with finer garden gravel.
These grain sizes are available for decorative gravel
Depending on which area of your garden you want to design, you should use different grain sizes for decorative gravel.
Coarse gravel has a grain size of 20 to 63 mm, medium gravel has a grain size of 6.3 to 20 mm and fine gravel is between 2 and 6.3 mm in size. When making your selection, make sure that decorative gravel with a minimum grain size of 8 mm is used for driveways and car parks, as smaller stones can get stuck in the tyre tread of cars.
The term decorative gravel does not describe any visual characteristics of the mineral grains. Any gravel that is perceived as attractive for decorative garden design is commercially available as ornamental gravel.
What you need to bear in mind when laying decorative gravel
To ensure that the area you have laid with decorative gravel remains attractive for a long time and is not densely overgrown with weeds within a very short time, you should lay a weed protection fleece under the decorative gravel. This prevents the growth of weeds and thus significantly reduces the amount of regular maintenance required for areas laid with decorative gravel. You should also edge the stone paths and flower beds, especially if you combine the decorative gravel with other ground coverings such as grass. This is because if the paths are not edged, the decorative pebbles can easily slip, which can cause problems, especially when mowing the lawn.
High-quality decorative pebbles - the different shapes and colours
In addition to the grain size, garden gravel also differs in terms of shape. Only rounded grains without corners and edges are considered real gravel. It does not matter whether the shape of the decorative pebble was created naturally, i.e. by flowing water in the river, or by mechanical processing. Crushed minerals with sharp edges and a grain size of 2 to 32 mm are called chippings. A grain size of 32 to 63 mm is referred to as crushed stone.
Ornamental gravel is also available in various colours - from black, brown-striped, white and yellow to red, wood colours or a sandstone look. Each colour can create its own look and effect in the garden.
Don't create a rock garden with decorative gravel
With decorative gravel, you can easily create beautiful, low-cost garden elements that are also extremely easy to maintain. This can quickly tempt you to create a rock garden with ornamental gravel. However, this type of garden design should be avoided at all costs, as the green spaces in gardens are important habitats for various animal species. Combine the decorative gravel with other green areas in your garden and create stylish accents with decorative gravel. Individual gravel beds can also have a major impact on the appearance of your garden. Not only will you create a colourful garden, but you will also do something good for a wide variety of animal species.
Buy decorative pebbles from Aquagart
If you're about to give your garden a new lease of life by creating paths or flowerbeds with decorative gravel, how about a beautifully designed pond with a selection of pond plants and small fish? Aquagart is your specialist for garden ponds. That's why you'll find everything you need to create a well-tended garden in our online shop, from pond liner and fleece to pond netting and stone liner.
By the way: Decorative pebbles are also ideal for edging and lining ponds, giving them a natural and rustic look. However, make sure that you wash the decorative gravel before using it in the garden, as it may still contain dust from the quarry. This quickly makes the water in your pond look cloudy and can also harm any fish swimming in the pond.
