How irrigation fleece works
Irrigation fleeces are fleeces that can store up to 10 litres of water per square metre. These absorbent irrigation fleeces have small openings and are made from synthetic propylene and polyester fibres. Water is absorbed through the openings in the irrigation mat and released continuously and slowly. This enables even watering without the water accumulating at the roots or being wasted. Due to their shape and outstanding moisture retention properties, irrigation fleeces are sometimes also sold under the name of storage fleece or irrigation mat.
Properties of irrigation fleeces that impress gardeners and plant lovers
Irrigation fleeces have proven their worth for many years in companies specialising in everything to do with the garden. In recent years, the number of amateur gardeners who also appreciate the benefits of irrigation fleeces for use in the garden, greenhouse or for the care of houseplants has also increased. Anyone using irrigation fleeces to grow young plants, for example, offers the tender plants ideal growing conditions and saves a large amount of maintenance work at the same time.
Another advantage of synthetic fibres is that they are rot-proof, meaning that the irrigation fleece can be used for irrigation purposes over a long period of time despite strong sunlight and other weather conditions.
For many types of vegetables, too much moisture can also impair the growth of young plants and seriously jeopardise their health. If the plant pots with the young plants are placed on an irrigation fleece that can store water, root neck diseases and fungal infestation can be effectively avoided. The irrigation mats also improve growth, as the plants never become too dry and always absorb the exact amount of water they need via the roots. At the same time, an irrigation fleece protects against excessively low temperatures in the root area. The soil temperature is much more even, which means the plants also thrive even better.
Not least, you save a lot of time when watering. The water is distributed evenly in the irrigation fleece so that each plant can be optimally supplied with minimal effort.
By the way: This nonwoven material with storage capacity was originally developed in the 1970s for drainage in the construction of roads and railway lines. It is still used in these important economic sectors, but gardeners no longer want to do without these nonwoven materials either.
How to use Aquagart irrigation fleece correctly
The irrigation fleece is used instead of peat or bark mulch, either over large areas under beds or as a moisturiser for very problematic soils that would hardly store any water without irrigation fleece. The advantage of irrigation fleeces is that they simulate the natural, water-bearing layers of the soil, but do not mould in comparison to bark mulch. However, make sure that you lay the irrigation fleece deep enough in the soil so that the plants still have enough space for their roots to spread out in the soil. The exact depth is of course dependent on the plants planted. Another option is to cut holes in the irrigation fleece to allow the plants to grow through the irrigation mat. However, even with this variant, the fleece should be placed a few centimetres below the soil, as too much water directly on the roots of the plant can cause it to rot.
In addition to large-scale use under beds or lawns, irrigation fleece can also be used in flower boxes, plant pots or greenhouses. Place the irrigation fleece under the open plant pots or under the soil in the flower pot. This means you can enjoy your plants for a long time without having to spend time watering them every day. Due to the size of the irrigation fleece, you don't need to worry about small areas such as the flower pot. The fleece is supplied rolled up and can then be cut to the required size.
Recommendations for watering with irrigation fleece
To get the most out of your irrigation fleece, you should follow a few important tips for correct use.
First of all, suitable placement is crucial. To do this, lay the irrigation fleece directly on the soil and cover it with a thin layer of mulch if necessary. This helps to retain moisture better and further inhibit the growth of weeds.
It is also important to regularly check whether the irrigation fleece is still working properly. Make sure that no blockages have formed in the openings and clean the irrigation mat if necessary to ensure an optimum supply of water.
Adjust the amount of watering to the needs of your plants. Take into account factors such as soil conditions, weather conditions and the type of plant. Customisation is crucial for the healthy growth of your plants
Buy irrigation fleece online now at Aquagart
Equip your flower boxes, vegetable patches or lawn with our irrigation fleece in various sizes and thicknesses and create optimal growing conditions for your plants. Depending on where you want to lay the fleece, you should choose a different weight of irrigation fleece. The basic rule is: The heavier the irrigation fleece, the more water it can store. However, more storage capacity is not necessarily better, because if the soil is too wet, this can lead to plants rotting. Used correctly, however, you can enjoy beautiful flowers or home-grown vegetables without having to remember to water the plants every day.
Because you can't completely avoid watering your plants despite using irrigation fleece, you can find a flexible garden hose in our online shop, which expands automatically when watering and contracts again when the work is done. This saves you valuable space, but you still always have a garden hose to hand.
To save even more time in the garden, you can also use the practical weed protection fleece. This prevents weed growth through light deprivation, so you can get rid of time-consuming weed removal without having to burden your garden with additional chemicals. You are also welcome to take a look at our range of stone liners or garden pond supplies!
